It's a time of firsts for the fledgling Rio Linda Educational Foundation. The new non-profit organization that is solely devoted to raising funds for district students and staff has made its first round of grants and scholarships. Nearly $4,000 in awards have been made for 2002-03, and another round of grants and scholarships are expected to be made in the spring for the following school year.

"We are off to a great start," volunteer executive director Don Walker said. The Educational Foundation is raising funds through the United Way campaign, direct contributions, grants, memorial gifts and a cookbook project.

Proceeds are being used for mini-grants, student study trips, educational enrichment activities and professional-development programs not funded through tax or lottery revenue.
