Community Learning Scholarships
RLEF provides Community Learning Scholarship to deserving students so they can experience out-of-school learning opportunities such as Camp Music Circus, Sierra Mountain Music Camp, Science and Adventure Camps.  These highly valuable but costly summer experiences are wholly or partially underwritten by the Foundation so that tuition fees do not prevent talented and deserving students from participating.  A recommendation from the student’s teacher is required in order to apply for a Community Learning Scholarship.

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Ted Hodel Memorial Scholarship
is offered yearly to an employee of the Rio Linda Union School District who would like financial assistance in furthering his or her job skills.  The $1000 stipend is awarded in June each year and can be used to defray costs of tuition, books or materials associated with enrollment in one or more college courses. Scholarship applications are due by May 15 of each year.

The Jim Powell Memorial Scholarship
is awarded each June  to a high school senior who is either an alumnus of the Rio Linda Union School District or the son or daughter of a current employee of the district.  The applicant must have declared an intention to pursue a career in public education.  The Powell Memorial is also a $1000 stipend to be used for college tuition or related costs.  Scholarship applications are due by May 15 of each year.

Staff Mini-Grants
RLEF offers annual mini-grants to staff of the RLUSD who want to implement instructional improvements, initiate research-based strategies or offer innovative learning experiences to their students.  Teachers and paraprofessionals may apply for individual or team grants, which must be completed in the year granted.  Grant proposals are reviewed by the RLEF Board of Directors, or a designated committee, and ranked for quality and adherence to the criteria cited in the proposal guideline.  Successful proposals will clearly answer the question:  How can I create experiences for my students that will engage them enthusiastically in learning?  Staff mini-grants are awarded by October 15 of each school year.  The number and amount of these grants varies with funds available.

Foundation Grant
When funds are available, one or more special grants may be awarded for school-wide projects.  Examples include visiting authors and theatre performances.  No formal application process or timeline is necessary for a Foundation Grant.  A letter describing the project should be sent to RLEF c/o the RLUSD district office well in advance of the date funds are needed.
